About Us
Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung (RLS) is one of the political foundations in Germany. These are politically affiliated with, but administratively independent from, distinct parties in the national parliament, the Bundestag. Based on the election results of their respective partner-parties, the foundations receive public funding accordingly. They are independent in framing their work and do not have to implement governmental policies. The RLS is an internationally operating, progressive non-profit institution for civic education that is close to the German Left Party (DIE LINKE).
The Rosa Luxemburg Foundation operates in the spirit of the labor and women’s movements, anti-fascism, and anti-racism. The foundation promotes critical analysis of society and seeks to collect, analyze, and disseminate information about the social and economic relations that dominate our world and generate destructive injustice and violence. The RLS aims to develop alternative concepts, approaches, and policy recommendations that will contribute to comprehensive social change, enabling the construction of a more inclusive, just, and peace-seeking society. In this context, special emphasis is placed on German–Israeli relations, over which the Holocaust casts its dark shadow. The Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung firmly opposes any manifestation of antisemitism and is committed to the legacy of Rosa Luxemburg, a Jewish socialist who throughout her life was target of antisemitic attacks.
The Israel office of the Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung opened in 2009, a year after a regional office for Jordan and the Palestinian Territories was established in Ramallah. The foundation’s work in Israel seeks to strengthen local progressive actors who are struggling against fascist and racist tendencies in the Israeli regime and society and for a more egalitarian and nonviolent society. The foundation operates in Israel in several ways: Creating and supporting safe spaces for the exchange of ideas and experiences; producing and disseminating information, analyses, and recommendations for action and policy change; and connecting local progressive activists and their struggles with similar activists and struggles in Germany, Europe, and the rest of the world, as part of promoting solidarity-based internationalism.
During the current period of activity (2024-2026), the main goals of the Israel office of the Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung are to promote new and/or updated narratives and strategies against right-wing hegemony and authoritarianism; to strengthen marginalized communities in their various struggles against exclusion, discrimination, and oppression and for an egalitarian and democratic society; and to strengthen the capacities of organizations and activists to challenge the militaristic culture in Israel and promote nonviolent alternatives in the public discourse.
